CNY 2011 in Penang

This year Chinese New Year, I decide to go Penang to have my vacation and also have fun time with my friends who are in Penang. We travel from KL in afternoon, purposely eat the KL char kuey tiao for comparison of what I am gonna eat in Penang. I have visit Penang for three times and all the trip that I go there are not as long as the trip that I went this CNY holiday.

It takes five to six hours to drive to penang, but the time spend to travel is depend on who drive the car, some might spend only four hours or even less depend how fast they drive. I can’t remember well what happen during the road as most of the time in the car I rest my eyes and charge my energy for this trip. When I open my eyes, it is already near Penang bridge.

Love the picture of the motorcycle above, the guy directly have a post when he knows there are few camera aim to him. Wanted to tag him to facebook but I do not have time to ask facebook address as we are on the highspeed highway.. Love to see Penang bridge as we are almost arrive at Penang and my food journey is almost start. Another feeling that I am happy to see Penang is, I have decide to commit to run in Penang bridge 42 KM for this November if I am not mistaken. My friend from Australia has been pestering me to join marathon with her and Last year I can’t make it as I need to travel overseas. Another goal that I want to achieve this year icon biggrin CNY 2011 in Penang

After arrive at Penang, my host gives very warm welcome to his house and cook for us. He is famous among his family and peers of how good he can cook and I have the highest privilege to taste his cooking that night, Stuff with a lot of food and also steam fish. I love the steam fish and it is very popular dish. The moment I took my camera and plan to take some picture of steam fish, it’s only bone. Prove that it is indeed really delicious.

The next day, Wake up around 8 am and that is the time for our journey for food is start, we hit the old market at Penang to taste some good quality food that some of the shop has history for serving good food for more than 25 years old. I love going for local market to try local food and also seeing how many local people are trying to sell their product, food, vegetables, cutlery, and even singing on market for some penny. It is really good exposure to seeing how local people in the place living their life daily.

In this market, it is my first char kuey tiao that I ate in Penang. Total char kuey tiao that I ate on that day is three plates and even the last plate cost around RM 7.5 per plate and the portion is small and service is indeed beyond human can accept. It is in the lorong selamat and it has been review in many travel magazine, in the lonely planet book, and even some travel television also do review with this restaurant. It seems to me that the taste is not as good as what the review told. Never ever will go back to this place again.

Beside all the eating and also visiting food store, tasting all the food that we must try while in Penang, we also went to batu feringgi, a good place to have beach vacation in penang. The time we went there, the place is appeared in nation newspaper due to illegal water sport in that place that run independently and ‘Take your own risk’ attitude without proper safety measure. I do love the place, but I still miss Kuta beach in Bali that I stole my heart.

So many good places, good food and also good companion in Penang that really makes this holiday become memorable. I do love to come again to Penang mainly to visit friends and chuch member. I love all the activity and really enjoy my holiday to the max. I feel the time is stop and make me allow to release all my burden and have a rest and just enjoy the moment.

Last but not least, we manage to see Nasi Kandar Beratur (Queue Kandar Rice). It is quite hype in Penang at the moment. You need to queue to have some taste that the restaurant offer and I see many people willing to queue and during weekend the queue will be longer than the picture. I never taste it before but ‘Nasi Kandar Kayu’ still better and tastier according to local but the price in Kayu much higher I guess.

It is conclude that I do really enjoy for all the activity and also the trip.

The Historical Town Melaka

Few weeks ago I just been to Melaka with my friends who comes from Manila. It is really fun going with them. Love to visit Melaka to enjoy they spicy food and also some food hard to be found in Kuala Lumpur. I have been four times going to Melaka and every time I went there, something is changed. Now the area are more modern, some shop in old town has been renovated into very latest and current restaurant or cafe. Feel sad that the old culture is become rare.

One thing that I love Melaka is the city similar with my hometown in Indonesia. Especially the food where most of the food are spicy. There are few places in here that they really maintain, but since many of places have been renovated, it really lost the feeling of historical.

The entire picture below are taken in Jonker street area. Love the setting and also the decoration for Chinese New Year

Visiting Manila

Manila 600x398 Visiting Manila

It is my first time visiting Manila. I am really excited before flight to Manila as I just sleep for three hours and it is not really deep sleep as my mind planning and imagining what I am gonna do in Manila. I see in the photos that Manila is similar to Jakarta in term of town scenery and also traffic. When I arrive there, I am a bit confuse about the road as they are left-sit drive, which is similar to US.

Manila has both modern and historical place. In the downtown, the heart of manila, few places are reserved as UNESCO heritage place and outskirt of it has lots of malls. I have lost count malls in manila town alone and the town is pretty big, quite similar to Jakarta.

Jeepney 600x398 Visiting Manila

It is my first time travel in Manila and I am quite amazed by public transport in here beside bus and lrt. which is Jeepney. Jeepney is their national public transport where you can  see them everywhere and every corner in Manila, and the price is cheap compare bus and taxi.

Another unique public transport is tricycle. Their tricycle can sit four people. I saw a tricycle can manage to carry four passenger, which I found quite risky and dangerous. Well, dangerous can be fun and thriller also. It is lucky that I can try the local transportation there to feel how to be living as local in Manila.

Kalesa 600x398 Visiting Manila

Kalesa is very special transport, where it is actually horse carriage. It can be found only in certain famous place, like Rizal Park monument and Intramuros. You need to pay to ride this (You can bargain the price as mostly they will charge more expensive when they know you are foreigner and does not speak tagalog).

Rizal Monument Park 600x398 Visiting Manila

Rizal monument is for remembrance of Philippine’s national hero. It huge park and has many little garden, like China garden and Japanese garden. It is easily access by any public transport, namely jeepney, bus or even taxi. I love to ride jeepney in Manila as they are pretty fast and convenience. When using taxi, need extra careful and keep insist to use meter rather than bargaining price, as taxi in Manila really overprice. It took me around 60 Peso from this place to Mall of Asia but the taxi driver often say it is far and need around 300 Peso.

Many Pinoy (what Philippians call themselves) tell me that if I come again, try to go out from Manila as Manila is business town where they do not offer any nature sightseeing or very less tourist attraction, but nevertheless I am really enjoy my trip in Manila.

Cameron Highland

Last weekend I just back from Cameron Highland, These few weeks I have been many places, last two weeks I went to Ipoh, last weekend was Cameron Highland, and this weekend is Manila. Although I am quite tired but I am really happy that I am able to travel many places, experience new things and take many photo. I love travel and one of my biggest dream is to travel around the world and experience many new things in life.

In Cameron Highland, they are very famous of strawberry and tea. There are many tea that comes from there that can be found in every part of KL, but drinking tea near the plantation really feels good as you can enjoy fresh air, cold breeze, and also nice aroma of tea. I have been drinking tea a lot during my stay in Cameron and I really enjoy being there. It is like sitting in the giant air condition room and when it is raining, it will rain very long and makes the temperature close to 16 degree Celsius.

After come back from there, I really miss Cameron Highland, as there are many memorable memories that I have created with couple of my friends there, and also relax the tension and nerve as the environment really refresh the mind and soul. I will be back there one day….
